What We Do There are 1.5 million nonprofits in the United States alone. Presented with so many choices, which charities should get your donation? We believe that the more donors know about extreme poverty and high impact interventions, the easier it is to decide which charities to support. The Life You Can Save excels at two vital tasks: we demonstrate the importance of effective and targeted giving, and we move large sums of donor money to the world’s most effective charities—while spending very little money to do so. Every dollar we spend on operations typically moves three to four additional dollars to our recommended charities. In 2015, we moved an estimated $1.35 million to our charities, up from $700,000 in 2014 and $500,000 in 2013. In 2016, The Life You Can Save expects to move more than $1.7 million to our seventeen recommended charities with the support of our donors. This sum does not include the additional money moved to our charities via donations made through our Giving Games philanthropy education program, and recurring donations from online pledges. Therefore, we believe that our projection of $1.7 million is a very conservative estimate of The Life You Can Save’s impact for the upcoming year. By 2020, our goal is to be able to move between $10 and $20 million each year to our recommended charities—in part, through our Giving Games educational model. Within the next five years, we intend to grow our Giving Games outreach program to include 50,000 participants a year. Since the inception of Giving Games in 2012, The Life You Can Save has helped sponsor and facilitate over 200 Giving Games at colleges, high schools, corporations, and churches across the globe. Giving Games encourage a lifetime of conscious charitable giving, and each outreach event multiplies The Life You Can Save’s impact for years to come. Our Priorities for 2016 Growing our community of donors. Ongoing improvements to online content continue to draw new visitors to our website and encourage more to return. We attribute our recent audience growth to several developments: improvements to the website’s user interface and design, expanded content, an increasingly active social media presence, and our use of donated Google AdWords. We have also expanded our public relations efforts to highlight Peter Singer’s research and writing, The Life You Can Save’s mission and vision, and our ongoing work on behalf of effective philanthropy education and outreach. Giving Games. Our Giving Games education model involves simulated charity assessments for participants. Giving Games will continue to play a key role in growing our community and inspiring new generations of lifelong donors who are passionate about effective philanthropy. Partnerships. Forging partnerships with philanthropic organizations, capital management firms, and colleges and universities will be critical for our future large-scale growth. We currently work with national and international assets management firms, corporations, philanthropy organizations, colleges, and universities. Future partnerships will include corporate philanthropy divisions, family and local foundations, wealth advisors, community nonprofits, research institutions, for-profit businesses, and social enterprises. Direct fundraising and events. Fundraising and educational events for high-net-worth individuals will be critical for moving large sums of money to our recommended charities, and for financing The Life You Can Save’s ongoing operations and advocacy work. Our development and outreach team currently has additional fundraising events scheduled for the 2016 giving season. In October 2015, The Life You Can Save sponsored a fundraising event for Fistula Foundation, featuring a world-renowned singer/songwriter in a benefit concert and dinner that raised more than $190,000 for Fistula Foundation. We have additional benefit concerts scheduled for our recommended charities throughout the 2016 giving season. In November 2015, The Life You Can Save partnered with the CEO of the Against Malaria Foundation (AMF) in co-hosting a fundraising event for one of North America’s premier networks for high net-worth investors. During the past fundraising season, The Life You Can Save played a key role in moving more than $2 million dollars in individual donations to AMF. Public Relations. Our recent public and media relations efforts have increased national awareness of The Life You Can Save and our recommended charities. The Life You Can Save and Peter Singer’s work have been profiled in national and local publications such as The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Chronicle of Philanthropy, Huffington Post Impact, Reddit, the Mr. Money Mustache financial planning blog, KQED Radio, KUOW Radio, Tiny Spark Radio, Nonprofit Chronicles, Vox, New Republic, and The Seattle Times.
