The Most Good You Can Do
Effective altruism is based on a very simple idea: we should do the most good we can. Obeying the usual rules about not stealing, cheating, hurting, and killing is not enough, or at least not enough for those of us who have the great good fortune to live in material comfort, who can feed, house, and clothe ourselves and our families and still have money or time to spare. Living a minimally acceptable ethical life involves using a substantial part of our spare resources to make the world a better place. Living a fully ethical life involves doing the most good we can.

We’re excited to launch our interactive Charity Impact Calculator, a new tool that lets you see what you get for your charitable giving. Our Impact Calculator shows you how your donation could be used to help provide services that could save the lives of some of the world’s poorest people, or help them to see again, or transform their lives in other positive ways. We highlight the work of twelve of the world’s most effective charities—and let you compare each charity’s impact side by side.
Best Charities for 2015
We are happy to announce The Life You Can Save's 2015 recommended charities. As you know, there are many great charities effectively reducing suffering and premature death among the poorest people in the world. We are confident that the ones we recommend are among the most effective and they are ones we personally feel great about donating to ourselves.
It's good to see more people thinking seriously about how to make philanthropy more effective. The latest addition to the literature is Eric Friedman's Reinventing Philanthropy: A framework for more effective giving (Potomac, Washington DC, 2013). It is, as Friedman says in the introduction, "by a donor, about donors, and for donors who want to look critically at what they can do to improve their philanthropy." As a donor who knows the field of philanthropy well, and has had many conversations with others in this field, Friedman is well-placed to speak of the "code of silence that suffocates constructive discourse."
I have just come across Julia Wise's blog "Giving Gladly". She is spending a lot of time thinking how best to live as an effective altruist. I particularly like her latest post, "Cheerfully", in which she describes how she originally thought she would not have a child, because it takes so much time and resources with which you could do a lot of good in the world.
