A word from our Founder, Peter Singer:

2013 was The Life You Can Save's first year of full-scale operation, and we have been closely monitoring our ability to move donations through our website to our top ten recommended charities. When we initially funded The Life You Can Save, our goal was to generate at least $3 for effective charities for every dollar we spent. We are happy to announce that in our first full year of operations, we exceeded that goal.

VIEW OUR 2013 IMPACT REPORT
Based on our own metrics along with those of our recommended charities, our conservative findings are:
Estimated money moved to recommended charities $594,504
2013 Expenses $147,104
Ratio of money moved : Expenses 4:1
You can find additional details about these figures HERE
Next, we are thrilled to announce that The Life You Can Save has achieved 501(c)(3) status as a nonprofit organization, allowing us to do incrementally more good per dollar spent on our operations. Of course, we already knew that The Life You Can Save makes no profit and is all about effective charitable giving, but it's nice to know that the U.S. Government recognizes this as well! This status also allows us to accept donations that are tax-deductible in the U.S.
We generally encourage our community to make donations directly to our top-10 recommended charities, not to our own organization. However, occasionally, as in this newsletter, we will ask you to support The Life You Can Save directly. We believe your contributions to The Life You Can Save will be money well spent; in 2014, our goal is to increase our ratio from 4 times to 5 times our operational budget moved to our suggested organizations. For example, a $100 donation to The Life You Can Save will be spent on promotional efforts that are expected to result in $500 moved to these poverty-fighting nonprofits.

During 2014 and beyond, we are committed to not spending any money that could have gone directly to our recommended charities unless we strongly believe our spending will have a net result of multiplied dollars going to these organizations. With a 2014 working budget of slightly under $200,000 and a 5x target multiple, we aim to move at least $1 million to our recommended charities in 2014.
Population Services International recently shared with us a pages-long list of quotations from donors who had cited The Life You Can Save as the deciding factor in their decision to give to PSI. These reminded us of the reason we are doing the work that we do to spread the culture of effective giving worldwide. We'll leave you with the words of just one of these donors:
"I heard about PSI via a recent article in the New York Times. It talked about thelifeyoucansave.org, which I looked up and found PSI as one of the recommended charities. I will be checking this site in the future to help determine who to give to because I really want to give to people in extreme poverty, and to organizations known to be particularly effective at providing support to them. In particular, I want to help as many people as possible with the relatively few dollars we can give."
Thank you in advance for contributing to The Life You Can Save and supporting our efforts to make your dollars even more effective in the fight to reduce global poverty and its devastating effects.
