Charitable Donations from Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs)

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD) from Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) have been permanently extended. Individuals can donate up to $100,000 per year directly from a traditional or Roth IRA to qualifying charities.

Qualified charities include most public charities (including religious institutions, certain veterans’ organizations, fraternal societies, and community foundations that provide scholarships) that are eligible to receive tax-deductible contributions.

If you wish to make a donation to a charity, there are potential benefits to contributing as a QCD. This method may be able to provide tax benefits whether or not you itemize your deductions. In addition, a QCD can satisfy all or a portion of your required minimum distribution (RMD).

As eligible distributions are non-taxable, federal and state taxes do not have to be withheld.

One of the key benefits of QCD’s for those who don’t itemize deductions is that if they are used as the funding source for charitable donations, the donor will receive tax benefits when there are otherwise would have been none due to the use of then standard deduction.

When a QCD is made, the distribution will be reported on form 1099-R and you will need to work with your tax professional to properly indicate a QCD on your tax return. You should also obtain a receipt from the charity and send it and your 1099-R to your tax professional.

If you wish to make a QCD, you should reach out to the advisor or firm where your IRA is held.
