Donate Crypto to The Life You Can Save
Donating cryptocurrency is a great way to support The Life You Can Save itself or any of the nonprofits we recommend. Our cryptocurrency donations are processed through Crypto for Charity, and you can currently donate a wide variety of cryptocurrencies to help save and improve lives around the world.
How can I donate cryptocurrency to The Life You Can Save?
You can make a safe, easy, and fast donation of cryptocurrency using the widget on this page. Just follow this quick and simple process:
- Select your preferred crypto and enter your gift amount.
- In the “Message to nonprofit” field, indicate whether you’d like your gift to go to one or all of our recommended charities (or leave this field blank to support The Life You Can Save itself). See the “How can my crypto donation help people in extreme poverty?” section for a full list of giving options.

We’d love to receive your contact info so we can thank you and send occasional updates, but you can also choose to give anonymously. To Donate to One of Our Cause Funds: The Life You Can Save operates five “cause funds”, each of which allocates donations to nonprofits we recommend that do a certain type of work. You can donate to the “Maximize Your Impact Fund”, “Education Fund”, “Health Fund”, “Quality of Live Fund”, or “Women and Girls Fund” by writing the name of the fund you want to give to in the “Message to nonprofit” field.
Donate to the All Charities Fund or 90/10: For donors who wish to support all our charities equally, we continue to offer our All Charities and our 90/10 options. Our 90/10 option allocates 90% of your donation to all our charities, split equally, and 10% to The Life You Can Save itself. Please write “the All Charities Fund” or “90/10” in the “Message to nonprofit” field.

Are crypto donations tax-deductible?
Anyone can give crypto using the widget on this page, but only US donors will be able to claim any eligible tax deductions. Â Australian donors should consider donating crypto to The Life You Can Save Australia, which will allow them to claim any tax relief they are entitled to. See below for more information about the tax-deductibility of crypto donations in different locations.
Tax benefits of donating crypto in the United States
Donating Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can be one of the most tax efficient ways to give.Â
In the US, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) classifies cryptocurrency as “property” for tax purposes. This classification means you can receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of the cryptocurrency (if you’ve held it for more than a year) and avoid the capital gains tax you would have incurred if you had sold the cryptocurrency first and then made a donation.Â
If you want to learn more about how donating crypto can lower your taxes, US donors may find this tax resource from Crypto for Charity helpful. Crypto for Charity also provides guidance on how to maximize the benefits of donating NFTs and of donating NFT Drop proceeds. As with any tax-related questions, be sure to consult with a qualified, professional tax advisor.
Tax benefits of donating crypto in Australia and other countriesÂ
Australia – The Life You Can Save Australia can accept crypto donations via The Giving Block. Donating crypto may be a tax efficient way to give for some donors; however we recommend donors consult a knowledgeable tax professional to get personalized advice.
Other countries – Some of our recommended charities and partners accept crypto donations outside of the US and Australia. Please email us at cryptoinfo@thelifeyoucansave.org for more information about these opportunities.
Is The Life You Can Save involved with NFTs in any way?
The Life You Can Save is interested in working with NFT artists, collectors, and communities who would like to use NFTs to fight poverty. This could involve donating NFTs so that they can be sold for charity, donating the proceeds of NFT sales, or working with NFT communities to select an effective charity to support that aligns with the community’s values. To learn more about these opportunities to use NFTs for good, please contact CryptoInfo@thelifeyoucansave.org.Â
We’ve also used NFTs ourselves. We’ve given Proof-of-Attendance-Protocol NFTs to attendees of our “What Good is Crypto?” and “Crypto Philanthropy in Australia” events. And we’ve benefited from the sale of a unique NFT version of Peter Singer’s 1972 article “Famine, Affluence, and Morality”, which commemorated 50 years since the publication of this article that has changed the lives of countless people around the world. Our own organization was named after a book that expanded on ideas first voiced in this landmark article, like the idea that just as it would be wrong to leave a child to drown in a shallow pond, so it is wrong to fail to help a child – or an adult for that matter – living in a low-income country who is at risk of dying from preventable, poverty-related causes. We’re deeply grateful to Mick Hagen, founder of the crypto firm Hightop, for purchasing this NFT as the proceeds of this sale help fund our work.
