Fundraiser with José González

Thank you to those who were able to join us live.

For those who missed the event, you can still view it and donate here:

“I’ve been waiting for the right occasion for a livestream and when The Life You Can Save contacted me it felt like a great opportunity. Especially as a fan of Effective Altruism and the work that TLYCS does to promote effective charities.”

– José González

The Life You Can Save is honored to partner with Swedish singer-songwriter José González in a live streaming performance from Bohuslän, Sweden. We are raising funds to assist those individuals and families living in extreme poverty.

The worst impact of COVID-19 for those living in poverty will likely not be COVID-19 deaths directly, but rather COVID-19’s knock-on or indirect effects — especially its impact on hunger, the overall economy, wellbeing, and unemployment. For example, it is estimated that ~200 million people in India have been thrown into poverty by the pandemic. Please join a community of people actively choosing to make a difference in the lives of those living in extreme poverty. Enjoy an incredibly talented musician and make a donation during this free live streaming event on Facebook and Instagram on September 19th.**

**All donations received will be split equally between all of The Life You Can Save’s recommended charities.

More event details

José González is a deep, artful thinker whose singular approach to songwriting and sonics sets him worlds apart. He has a voice. He has a sound. He has a point of view. González has performed on several television programs, including Late Night with Conan O’Brien, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and others. His music has also appeared on well-known TV shows such as The O.C., One Tree Hill, House, and Friday Night Lights — to name just a few. González also features prominently on the soundtrack to Ben Stiller’s “The Secret Life of Walter Mitty”.

The lyrical content of his second album, In Our Nature, was influenced in part by his reading of books like The God Delusion by evolutionary biologist Richard Dawkins and Practical Ethics by ethicist Peter Singer. Peter Singer, whom journalists have bestowed as the “world’s most influential living philosopher,” is the founder of The Life You Can Save and has written a book by the same name which is now available for free download on www.thelifeyoucansave.org/the-book. González’s most recent album, Vestiges & Claws, was also critically acclaimed. It received an IMPALA Silver Sales Award and won the IMPALA Album of the Year Award. Reflecting on Vestiges & Claws, González said, “I think that might be where there is some sort of common thread on this new record: The zoomed out eye on humanity on a small pale blue dot in a cold, sparse and unfriendly space. The amazing fact that we are here at all, an aim to encourage us to understand ourselves and to make the best of the one life we know we have — after birth and before death.”

In a time where those living in extreme poverty need us even more than before, let’s make the best of our lives now and choose to spend our resources where we can have a significant impact on the lives of those in extreme poverty. See you on September 19th.
