Donate Cryptocurrency to Fight Extreme Poverty

Donating cryptocurrency is a powerful way to support The Life You Can Save and the nonprofits we recommend in fighting extreme poverty worldwide. Your crypto donation directly funds proven life-saving interventions like malaria prevention, deworming treatments, and cash transfers to families living on less than $2 per day. Our cryptocurrency donations are processed securely through Crypto for Charity, and you can donate a wide variety of cryptocurrencies to help save and improve lives around the world. As an added benefit, crypto donations are also highly tax-efficient for donors.

Our cause funds are a great way to support multiple nonprofits that help the global poor in similar ways with a single donation. Your donation can Maximize Your Impact over all dimensions of poverty, Help Women & Girls, improve Health or Quality of Life, or promote Education. In each case, the fund will disperse your gift to highly cost-effective and evidence-backed nonprofits working in that cause area.

If you have made a donation through Crypto for Charity and asked for a receipt, you should have gotten a donation receipt from FreeWill Impact Fund. To claim any tax relief that you are legally entitled to, please see tax deduction claim instructions on the Crypto For Charity website.

The Life You Can Save aims to make “smart giving simple”, and accepting cryptocurrency donations helps us connect more donors with highly effective charities fighting extreme poverty. We want to give donors as many options as possible to support life-saving work, and we also want to help the nonprofits we recommend reach new supporters in the crypto community.

As crypto adoption continues to grow globally, we see crypto philanthropy as an important new way to help the global poor. Every crypto donation, regardless of size, translates directly into life-saving interventions like malaria prevention, deworming treatments, and direct cash transfers to families in extreme poverty.

With more than 220 million crypto users worldwide and 1 billion users expected by 2030, we see crypto philanthropy as a new and exciting fundraising avenue to help the global poor.

Anyone can give crypto using the widget on this page, but only US donors will be able to claim any eligible tax deductions.  Australian donors should consider donating crypto to The Life You Can Save Australia, which will allow them to claim any tax relief they are entitled to. See below for more information about the tax-deductibility of crypto donations in different locations.

Tax benefits of donating crypto in the United States

Donating Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies can be one of the most tax efficient ways to give.

In the US, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) classifies cryptocurrency as “property” for tax purposes. This classification means you can receive a tax deduction for the fair market value of the cryptocurrency (if you’ve held it for more than a year) and avoid the capital gains tax you would have incurred if you had sold the cryptocurrency first and then made a donation.

If you want to learn more about how donating crypto can lower your taxes, US donors may find this tax resource from Crypto for Charity helpful. Crypto for Charity also provides guidance on how to maximize the benefits of donating NFTs and of donating NFT Drop proceeds. As with any tax-related questions, be sure to consult with a qualified, professional tax advisor.

Tax benefits of donating crypto in Australia and other countries

Australia The Life You Can Save Australia can accept crypto donations via The Giving Block. Donating crypto may be a tax efficient way to give for some donors; however we recommend donors consult a knowledgeable tax professional to get personalized advice.

Other countries – Some of our recommended charities and partners accept crypto donations outside of the US and Australia. Please email us at info@thelifeyoucansave.org for more information about these opportunities.

The Life You Can Save is interested in working with NFT artists, collectors, and communities who would like to use NFTs to fight poverty. This could involve donating NFTs so that they can be sold for charity, donating the proceeds of NFT sales, or working with NFT communities to select an effective charity to support that aligns with the community’s values. To learn more about these opportunities to use NFTs for good, please contact info@thelifeyoucansave.org

We’ve also used NFTs ourselves. We’ve given Proof-of-Attendance-Protocol NFTs to attendees of our “What Good is Crypto?” and “Crypto Philanthropy in Australia” events. And we’ve benefited from the sale of a unique NFT version of Peter Singer’s 1972 article “Famine, Affluence, and Morality”, which commemorated 50 years since the publication of this article that  has changed the lives of countless people around the world. Our own organization was named after a book that expanded on ideas first voiced in this landmark article, like the idea that just as it would be wrong to leave a child to drown in a shallow pond, so it is wrong to fail to help a child – or an adult for that matter – living in a low-income country who is at risk of dying from preventable, poverty-related causes. We’re deeply grateful to Mick Hagen, founder of the crypto firm Hightop, for purchasing this NFT as the proceeds of this sale help fund our work.
